Calcium is the most abundant
mineral in our body and is involved not only in bone and
teeth formation, but also in cardiac function, muscle contraction
and other important functions. Adequate calcium
can be supplied by daily foods, such as milk, yogurt, cheese,
tofu, almonds, sardines, broccoli and oranges. For
example, one 8 ounce glass of milk contains about 300mg of
calcium. Calcium supplementation, however, may be required
if you do not eat those calcium-rich foods regularly, especially
if you are lactose intolerant.
Calcium supplements come in many
different salt forms, including citrate, carbonate and gluconate. They contain
different amounts of elemental calcium. For example, 600mg
of calcium citrate only contains 126mg of the elemental calcium.
Therefore, you should check the type of calcium salt when
you choose your calcium supplement products. Calcium carbonate,
for example, contains more elemental calcium but has to be
taken with food for better absorption. Taking
a calcium product with vitamin D will improve absorption.
Adequate calcium in the body
is extremely important for your health. Having enough calcium
may prevent many diseases and discomforts, such as osteoporosis
and arthritis. If you have any questions about calcium, talk
to your pharmacist.
