Quinoa
May help prevent: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure,
intestinal disease, obesity, osteoporosis
This ancient grain-like seed has gained popularity in recent years for
its nutrition superstardom. Also referred to as Inca rice, quinoa provides
a good source of protein, including all of the essential amino acids.
Compared with other grains, quinoa supplies some of the highest amounts
of vitamins and minerals. Quinoa supplies a hefty amount of iron, copper
and zinc to support a strong immune system and beat fatigue. In addition,
quinoa delivers a good source of magnesium to support strong bones and
teeth. Its rich fibre content combats constipation and reduces risk of
developing intestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and colon
cancer. With its high fibre and protein content, quinoa may support weight
loss and prevent and manage diabetes by suppressing appetite and stabilizing
blood sugars. Quinoa is also a healthy gluten free choice for those with
celiac disease or a wheat allergy. This healthy grain-like seed also
contains a variety of phytochemicals, including saponins to lower cholesterol
and fight against colon cancer.
Action Tip: Quinoa, pronounced either key-NOH-wah or KEEN-wah, is quick
and easy to prepare. The grain-like seeds have a delicate nutty flavour
and are versatile for use in many dishes including soups, stews, stuffing,
and salads or as a pilaf. Quinoa flour can also be added to baked goods
and breads.
