Pears may be helpful in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol with their potassium and high fibre content. The rich insoluble fibre content combats constipation and intestinal diseases, as well as supports a healthy weight and fights colon cancer. Pears also supply vitamin C and beta-carotene, two antioxidants that protect against cancer and heart disease, as well as preserve healthy vision and boost the immune system. In addition, pears deliver riboflavin, a B vitamin important for healthy skin and eyes and energy production. Action Tip: Ripe juicy pears are best enjoyed as is. Baked or broiled pear halves can be served beside poultry, lamb or pork. They add wonderful flavour to fruit or green salads, desserts and baked goods. For variety, use pears or pearsauce instead of apples or applesauce called for in recipes. |
