Although little research has been done on mangoes, they certainly are a healthy decadent fruit. Mangoes supply an excellent source of beta-carotene and additional cancer fighting phytochemicals including phytoene, phytofluene and beta-cryptoxanthin. The flavonoid quercetin and vitamin C also join the cancer fighting team in mangoes and fight against heart disease. In particular, mangoes contain a type of phenolic acid found only in tropical fruits. For the same reason mangoes do not brown when sliced, scientists believe that gallic acid protects the fruit from oxidation and appears to reduce cancer growth in a similar manner. To protect against heart disease, mangoes supply vitamin B6, vitamin E, potassium and folate. In addition, its insoluble fibre maintains healthy blood pressure levels and healthy waistlines to further reduce the risk of heart disease. Action Tip: Mangoes are delicious in salsas, chutneys, baked in pies, breads or muffins. Enjoy its juicy succulent flavour in smoothies or served over fish, chicken or turkey. Mango slices bring sweet flavours to green and fruit salads. |
