This traditional red Christmas berry does more than add zest to turkey dinners. Its many phytochemicals make it a power-packed punch to fight disease. Cranberries are best known for their ability to ward off urinary tract infections (UTIs). Large molecules called A-linked condensed tannins act as a coating to prevent bacteria from adhering to bladder walls therefore reducing incidence of infection. This same polyphenol may prevent ulcers by inhibiting Helicobacter pylori from adhering to stomach lining and prevent dental plaque by keeping bacteria in the mouth from sticking to teeth. To help fight heart disease and stroke, the rich red colour of cranberries retards the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, thins the blood and reduces blood clots. This rich pigment may also reduce the risk of developing cancer, particularly breast cancer. Action Tip: Enjoy these tart berries at more than just your holiday dinner. Frozen and dried cranberries add flavour and colour to muffins, loaves and cookies. Jazz up traditional trail mix with dried cranberries and shake up smoothies with frozen or fresh cranberries. Refresh your tastebuds with a splash of 100% tart cranberry juice in soda water or a glass of blended 100% cranberry juice. |
