stocking your emergency pantry

It's a good idea to keep a few basic supplies on hand in the event of an unexpected emergency. In addition to a good first aid kit for your home, car and office, keeping a minimum of a three-day supply of food and water for you, your family members and pets is recommended by disaster planning experts. Use these tips to help keep your emergency pantry in top shape.

Stock up on non-perishable foods that are ready-to-eat. Here are some ideas:

Canned stew, beans, fish, meat, soup

Canned fruits and vegetables

Dried fruit

Granola bars

Energy bars

Dried cereal

Peanut butter

Crackers

Jam

Cookies

Trail mix

Nuts

Juice (tetra packs)

Skim milk powder

Pretzels

  • Store about 4 litres of bottled water per person per day in a cool, dark place. Remember to replace your water supply every six months.

  • Canned goods are better than glass because they are not breakable. Remember to include a manual can opener in your pantry.

  • Vacuum-packaged foods (the kind you take on backpacking trips) are another type of food you can store, but they are more expensive.

  • If you are disaster planning for one, try to choose single serving portions because leftovers may spoil.

  • Refresh your emergency food supply once a year.
